Mackey was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1807 and practiced medicine there unitl his interest in Freemasonry led him to give up his practice so he could devote all of his energy to the secret society. Considered the authority on the subject of Freemasonry, he authored many books on the subject including the Symbolism of Freemasonry, while holding many high positions in the order including Grand Master of the Grand Council of the United States.
